What grooming schedule is required for my dog's coat type?

SHORT/SMOOTH COAT BREEDS

Grooming Between 2 and 4 Weeks.

This is the easiest coat to look after and include breeds such as Bull Dogs, Frenchies, Pugs and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

The key here is occasional but regular bathing with quality shampoos and a professional brush to remove of all that dead hair.

A frequent challenge with short haired breeds is that they can suffer from Itchy and Dry Skin. It is important to wash your dog with quality shampoo and conditioner such as 'Wild Wash' which aren't just great for a dog’s coat, but also great for cleaning up all the bacteria from their skin and allowing them to smell wonderful again.

SILKY COATED DOGS

Grooming Every 6 to 8 Weeks.

This covers breeds such as Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Cocker Spaniel, and Irish Setter.

Silky coated dogs can either be single coated (Yorkshire Terrier) or Double Coated (Cocker Spaniel).  Both coat types share the characteristic of continuous growth and shed twice a year. Silky coats can be more difficult to maintain and will require brushing daily.

The length of time between trips to the groomers is all about the length of the cut. If you like to have a very short cut on your dog, then you may be able to come in for a groom every 2 to 3 months.  Cuts with a longer length should be booked back in within at least 6 weeks to avoid matting and tangling occurring.

CURLY & WAVY COATS

Grooming Every 4 to 6 Weeks.

This includes all the poodle mixes: Cockapoos, Labradoodles, Cavapoos.

Most breeds with this hair type should be at the groomers every 4 to 6 weeks, with only exceptionally short haircuts being able to leave it to 8 weeks until they return.

These breeds are the more likely to mat.  Severe matting can cause many serious complications, so with these breeds it is particularly important to have a grooming schedule in place.

Any hair longer than 1/2 Inch needs to be brushed through at least 4 times a week and hair longer than an inch should be brushed through daily.

DOUBLE COATS

Short - Full De-Shed every 3 months.
Additional Wash every 4 to 6 weeks.
Medium/Long - Full Groom Every 7 to 8 Weeks.

Dogs that have short double coats include: Labradores and Akitas.  Medium / Long haired double coated dogs include: Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds

Both Short and Medium / Long Double-Coated dogs have a water repellent topcoat and a soft warm undercoat.

Short haired double coated dogs are seasonal shedders who should visit the groomers at least 4 times a year to de-shed all the dead hair.  Additionally, these dogs would also benefit from a Deep Conditioning Bath & Dry every 3 to four weeks. This would invigorate the coat and assist in eliminating bacteria from the coat causing bad odours.

Medium / Long haired double coated dogs can have a coat length of up to 2.5 inches.  These dogs require regular brushing and de-shedding.  A majority have long feathers on their feet, legs, bellies, bottoms and ears that will require trimming work to bring them back into perfect shape. It would be recommended that dogs should be groomed every 7 to 8 weeks.
